HapHab - Story of a passion project that went mainstream

One fine day, two friends from school met at a chai joint . The tea stall happened to be next to a timber yard. Next to some neatly cut and stacked pieces of long logs, lay heaps of dusty blocks of wood in random shapes and sizes. On striking a conversation with the timber yard owner, it was revealed that the dusty mound of wood was what the industry calls wasteage - remains of whatever was left after using the best bits. There was Teak, Red Sal, Seesham and pinewood lying there just to be scrapped. "Trees are cut fresh to meet the demands of the market throughout the year saar - for doors, sofas, wardrobes... what you see there is scrap" he smiled. If they don't get a fair price for the remains, they would be burnt eventually said the owner with another wry smile. This has been the practice since ages" he added. The friends sighed and left the scene. One of the friends returned a few days later to pick up some of the scrapwood to build some small knick-knacks for his house. He had to employ some carpenters to get it done. Finding an eligible candidate was a task in itself. This revealed another dimension of the problem.

Everyone has bills to pay

Machines and industrialization left many occupations by the way side. Carpenters and their ilk were not spared either. When the modular kitchen, wardrobes and office cubicles stormed the market, most skilled artisians found themselves clueless. Even to this day, most of them sell themselves short for the skill and service they offer. Some of them downskilled themselves as machine operators in factories that churned out modular interiors by square feet. Others, switched jobs to become a painter or a mason. Job satisfaction be damned. They had to pay the bills.

Pondering over the pandemic

The pandemic left the world stranded and sent many indoors indefinitely. It’s the new normal, we were told. With every screen around you asking you to stare at it for hours, binge watch, or doom scroll, it did not take long to realize that there’s nothing normal about the new normal. What started as a distraction soon led to video fatigue, a sense of dejection, and even depression.  What makes us truly happy? Likes, shares, forwards?

Thus, HapHab was born

The two friends wanted to help. They stocked up some salvaged wood, brought together a group of carpenters and artisans and in mid 2020 started their experiments to see if this project was commercially viable. Today, HapHab (short for 'Hap'py 'Hab'its) is growing with a rather ambitious plan of making good habits aspirational. One (algorithm defying, anti-screentime) gadget at a time. Every purchase you make from this webstore will further HapHab's resolve to remain 100% sustainable and generate better employment for the skilled, but unorganzed workforce. And leave you with a habit that makes you truly happy for sure!
